Tiger-Rock Academy Newsletter
For the week of: 10/07-10/12
Cycle Tenet: "Knowledge, the result of being an active learner."
Good Afternoon,
Throwback Thursday: Next Cycle we will begin our Throwback Thursday Game on our Social Media Sites. Students and Parents will have the opportunity to see all of our trainers, leadership, and honors team members when they were younger, and guess which member it is.
On-Time Policy: Parents & Students: Please be ON TIME for your lessons, which means to be in uniform with belts and required equipment by the time the lesson begins. We have recently had students showing up 30-40 minutes LATE to a 55 MINUTE LESSON, which is unacceptable. Parents, I realize it is tough getting children from here to there, and with all of the equipment they need with a snack in their tummy. I give grace for five minutes and even ten minutes late, but students arriving 30-40 minutes late will not be allowed to participate in class.
Fantasy of Trees Volunteers: A good friend, and director at the Fantasy of Trees has messaged Mr. Bailey, and said they are in "desperate" need of teenagers and adults for volunteers this year! If you would like to assist in setting up for the event to benefit Children's Hospital on November 22nd., please let Mr. Bailey know. Also, if you have any youth groups/church groups that may be interested in helping at the event, Mr. Bailey can give you the directors contact information.

Tiger-Rock Tuesday!
Don't forget our new tradition!
We know that everyone loves to sport the colors/shirts/hats, etc of their
favorite teams! Last week we started the "Tiger-Rock Tuesday"
tradition. We want to encourage all students to wear one of their Tiger Rock
T-shirt's to their school every Tuesday. Just like Tennessee fans love seeing
other Vol shirts.....we want our students to feel empowered when they see all
those Tiger Rock shirts in their local schools (in the hallway, lunchroom,
fellow classmates, etc!). We are a team! Wear your Tiger-Rock apparel to
school tomorrow! Post the pictures to our facebook page and/or use hashtag
#TigerRockTuesday

Why should I test for rank? Insight from Master Black Belt Lili Bowen
Good Afternoon,
I just wanted to send out a quick reminder that the deadline for Rank Exam (testing) registration is quickly approaching. The deadline is this Saturday by 12:00p.m. Please see a Tiger-Rock trainer to make sure your child is eligible and ready for rank exams.
For new parents wondering why my child should continuously test at rank exams, please take a moment to read a note from Master Lili Bowen, owner of Bowen's Tiger-Rock Academy in Woodstock, Georgia.
Even though TKD skill is exercised & enjoyed each class, nothing marks accomplishment like receiving a stripe or a BELT! Our perception of ourselves change when it's placed around our waist. There's a feeling of pride and also new responsibility. That "new responsiblity" comes from the examples of those ranks who have come before us, we know that example is now up to us! Ask any new Black Belt, they're excited but scared to death. They've respected that rank for so long, they can't believe that THEY are responsible for the MODERN DAY LEGACY that rank demands. It's a joy for all instructors to see their students climb the ranks. Their confidence grows with each new level. Please, take every test seriously. Plan your path of success. Nothing takes away a student's thunder as missing an opportunity to progress. It's not just seeing your classmates pass you by, it's feeling like you put in the work and were "benched" on game day while other teammates get the spotlight & recognition. On my dying day, I'll tell you the greatest thing that TKD has given me is life lessons in short & long term goals with benchmarks, set backs and victories. It has taught me that we can accomplish anything we put our mind to as long as it's SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE & has a DEADLINE. A goal without a deadline is just a wish!
Please let us know how we can help you plan for your child's success in this program!

Why choose Tiger-Rock Martial Arts for Children?
Why choose Tiger-Rock Martial Arts as a sport for children?
There is a reason why Oprah, Dr Phil, Dr Laura Schlesinger, Jillian Michaels (Biggest Loser), Tony Robbins, pediatricians, child physiologists, and educators the world over all have alluded to the fact that Martial Arts is one of the most valuable things you can involve your child in.
It goes way beyond self defense and can help a child in nearly every aspect of their life. Improved health and fitness, athletic enhancement, increased confidence, better concentration, better behavior, more courteous and respectful; martial arts can help in all these areas.
Does this sound too good to be true? It’s not. As a matter of fact, many experts agree that in this day and age of escalating childhood obesity, increased playground violence and deteriorating family structure, if you do nothing else for your child, you should make sure that they learn how to swim and they learn martial arts. Let’s discuss why.
Self Defense – “Practice the fight so that you don’t have to” is a phrase that is often used to describe the self defense benefits of martial arts training. It refers to the fact that as a child becomes more confident in their ability to defend themselves thru martial arts training. The need to defend themselves automatically decreases because they unconsciously begin to carry themselves in a more confident manner and that confidence is projected to those around them, making them less vulnerable to predatory behavior. On top of that, martial arts’ training includes strategic self defense as well as actual self defense. Children are taught how to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and how to avoid confrontations.
Athletic Enhancement – There is a reason why virtually every professional sports team in virtually every major sport supplements their training with martial arts. Martial arts training offer several advantages. First off, it is amazingly effective in enhancing general coordination because it uses every part of the body in a balanced way. Upper body, lower body, right side, left side, forward movement, lateral movement, rotational movement, it’s all included in martial arts training.
Fitness - The three pieces of the fitness puzzle are strength, flexibility and endurance. Martial arts training demand a balance between the three. Therefore, a child who trains in martial arts will find their deficiencies greatly enhanced. Also, because of the balance in the three pieces of the fitness puzzle, they are less likely to injure themselves while participating in other athletic endeavors.
Health - Martial arts training is a proven link to better health for people of all ages, but especially children for several reasons. First off, it is great exercise. But because it is fun, kids don’t mind doing it. Discussing diet and lifestyle habits with students is a part of martial arts training, so children who grow up training develop healthy habits that will stick with them for life.
Concentration - Very few activities engage the mind, body and spirit more than martial arts. Because of this, a child’s ability to concentrate is greatly enhanced by their martial arts training and this concentration tends to be easily transferable to other activities.
Respect and Courtesy – Due to the fact that martial arts teaches techniques that could be harmful to others if applied, martial arts instructors are obliged to stress the importance of respect, courtesy, and restraint. It has been proven time and again that children who are skilled in martial arts tend to be extremely respectful, considerate and composed.
Confidence - Martial arts virtually always lends to increased confidence in children for a couple of specific reasons. First off, there are no bench sitters, every child participates and is judged not against others but more importantly, against their own potential. Secondly, the structure of martial arts is built on the concept of setting children up for success by giving them a series of realistic, short term goals that they can attain quickly while keeping them focused on an exciting, long term goal. Each time they experience success, their confidence improves until they tend to believe that with hard work and dedication, they can accomplish just about anything.

Good Afternoon,
We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend with friends and family. We are now two weeks away from our rank examinations. Please remember the deadline to register for the rank exams are April 6th. After April 6th, all other testing registrations are an additional $10.
Please Help: Isiah Stinnett's (A green belt in our program) dad, Dennis Stinnett, had to have emergency back surgery last Friday. All is well, however, he will be out of work for approximately 4-5 weeks. With four kids, and the dad as the sole provider, we know how tight things can get. We have a donation jar up by the front desk if anyone is willing to drop off change/cash to support this family. Thank you!
