Tournament reminders and closed tomorrow.

Good evening,

I would like to remind everyone that we will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, (11/16) for our Fall National Championships in Chattanooga, TN. The Kid Grappling class has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 5:30p.m. Please wish all of our tournament competitors good luck tomorrow, and follow us on Facebook and Google Plus (Tiger-Rock Martial Arts of West Knoxville) to receive updates as to how well our students do at tournament tomorrow. It is going to be a fantastic day!

-Wristbands (must have to get into the facility)

-Black Pants

-Red Shirt

-White Jacket top

-Rank Belt

-Sparring Gear (Helmet, elbow pads, hand pads, mouthpiece, groin cup, shin guards, kicks)

-Music for free design/extreme (boom box, we will have one available as well)

-A winning attitude to knock those nervous bugs out of the way!

Tiger-Rock Martial Arts tournament preperation clinic

Get READY! It’s tournament time! Our academy will be hosting a tournament preperation clinic next Tuesday (6/25) to prepare for our championships. Not sure if you want to go to tournament? Come try it at our academy before you step up to the big stage. Not sure about the rules? Come learn them from one of our trainers. The upcoming championships are a great way to try out the tournament competition stage for the very first time.

Academy Closed Friday (1/25) Due to Inclement Weather

Following Knox County Schools and the University of Tennessee, the academy will be closed 1/25 due to icing conditions and inclement weather. Please pick up additional training days throughout the week to make up. Check your email or our website later this evening for a possible modified Saturday schedule. Stay Safe and Warm!

The War on Bullying

Has anyone noticed the new War on Bullying? Bullying has been getting a lot of press and has become quite the catch phrase. Bullying or peer intimidation pervades many aspects of our daily existence: in the workplace, schools, and now especially, the internet. Facebook and other social networking services have been linked to a number of suicides committed by distraught teenagers being harassed online. Perceived psychological abuse has its way of being just as damaging as the physical kind. Of course bullies shaking down smaller and weaker kids for their lunch money still happens and the new anti-bullying legislation being proposed probably won't have much of an effect in public schools where "zero-tolerance" is already in force. I can't blame the school system for trying. It has been suggested that the Columbine High School massacre was carried out by a pair of chronic victims of classroom bullying that went unchecked.

The psychological profile of the modern bully has been updated to include characteristics of entitlement and narcissism from the classic version that depicts the bully as a self-loathing coward who may have been (or is) the victim of abuse, especially at home.

Children enrolled at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts are taught the virtues of respect and self-reliance in addition to self-defense. One wonders how many youngsters who start off as shy and awkward (perfect bully fodder) really manage to break out of their shell to lose their victim mentality. How many kids can honestly say that - thanks to martial arts or whatever - they now can ward off the neighborhood punk with panache. Now, Tiger-Rock Martial Arts is taking the Anti-Bullying approach not only to physical bullying, but also to verbal bullying.
